I have finally gotten around to summarizing food reviews from my participation in the Fire and Ice Ultra. The reviews below are for meals that have not been previously covered (and can be found in the food section of this site). These new reviews will also be added there for completeness.
For this event I utilized a combination of Extreme Adventure freeze dried meals and some left over Expedition Foods offerings. I also brought along some other brands to research (Mountain House). The Extreme Adventure meals typically have 1,000 Kcals each and offers some interesting entires. While most any freeze dried meal is good by themselves, many can be improved by the addition of various spices to taste. Having a “bland” offering is appealing to most everyone at one time or another.
Mountain House Breakfast Skillet: A hash browns, eggs, sausage pepper and onions blend. Good eggs for the most part especially if you add green chile. I guess my somewhat negative bias comes from raising chickens and always having fresh eggs. 3.8/5.0
Extreme Adventure Food Thai Chicken with Rice: If you are a Thai food lover this will disappoint. Lots of rice and not much chicken (needs more protein). On the hotness scale it is <1. Bring along some spices to liven this up. 4.0/5.0
Extreme Adventure Foods Porridge with Sultans: Not many sultans, typical wallpaper paste. Add extra water to get it down. 3.2/5.0
Extreme Adventure Food Porridge with Maple Syrup: This was fairly good and nice and sweet. Consistency was typical but with a little extra water it was OK. 3.8/5.0
Extreme Adventure Food Strawberries and Rice Pudding: While this is considered a dessert and is only 500 Kcals it is quite tasty. 3.8/5.0
Extreme Adventure Food Moroccan Chicken and Couscous: I really enjoyed this. On its own it is good, if you spice it up some it is even better. Green chile powder or Moroccan spices go well. 4.6/5.0
Extreme Adventure Food Beef Shepherds Pie: I was very skeptical of this one at first having envisioned a mass of tasteless mush. I was mistaken. This meal while mushy was quite tasty. Basic salt and pepper bring it up a notch but as you can tell I do like my spices. 4.0/5.0
Expedition Foods Asian Noodles with Chicken and Mixed Vegetables: This was a very good meal. Re-hydration was fast and there was just the right amount of flavor with a little spicy after kick. Fair amount of chicken too. A favorite! 4.3/5.0
Extreme Adventure Food Granola with Blueberries: A nice solid break from porridge. 4.0/5.0
Extreme Adventure Food Spaghetti Bolognese: You really can not mess this one up. The only way to make it better would be with a couple of slices of garlic bread. Hmmm, might have to work on that. 4.1/5.0
Bon Appetit!
